Build a Sustainable career in Construction through the BUILD Programme

The BUILD Programme focuses on the built environment, specifically Sustainable Construction & related industries. How is the programme structured? The Programme is structured in three parts:

  1. There is a three week induction period with guest speakers and events;
  2. This is followed by 14 weeks training, leading to a City & Guilds Certificate/Diploma in Sustainable Construction;
  3. Having completed the qualification you will be matched with a suitable employer and receive at least six weeks work placement (minimum of 10 weeks for under 25’s)

What is the aim of the Qualification? These qualifications have been developed to provide those who wish to work in the construction industry with the knowledge required to ensure that new builds and retrofitted buildings are carried out with suitable environmentally sympathetic materials and equipment. In addition, participants will be equipped with the information to advise customers on energy consumption and the selection of the most appropriate equipment. momentumWhat modules are covered? The core modules delivered as part of the Certificate/Diploma in Construction Skills are:

  • Energy in buildings for sustainable construction;
  • Airtight technologies in sustainable construction;
  • Waste and waste management in sustainable construction;
  • Water use and harvesting in sustainable construction.

Optional modules include:

  • Environmental impact of buildings in sustainable construction;
  • Materials and products used for sustainable construction;
  • Low carbon techniques and technologies used in buildings in sustainable construction;
  • Specification and Design of low carbon buildings in sustainable construction;
  • Advise customers and clients on sustainable construction;
  • Solar thermal technologies used in sustainable construction;
  • Photovoltaic technologies used in sustainable construction;
  • Heat pump technologies used in sustainable construction;
  • Specification and design of low carbon buildings;
  • Building insulation for building fabric super-structures in sustainable construction;
  • Building insulation for building services in sustainable construction.

Work Placements This is a key part of the programme where students will be matched with suitable employers for a minimum of a six week placement. During this placement the participants will use the skills acquired as part of the programme in a work setting. How much does it cost? This programme is free to eligible participants under the Solas Momentum Programme Who can apply? The BUILD Programme is so called as it aims to: Broaden knowledge and opportunities for participants in the Sustainable Construction Sector; Upskill participants with recognized, certified training in this new/evolving subject; Use Innovative ways of learning new skills with the hands on application of the taught subjects; Learn specific skill sets in areas such as energy in buildings, airtight technologies, insulation, heat pumps photovoltaics etc; Diversify and extend your experience in this growing sector. € 1.5B PER YEAR SPENT ON SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS The claim comes from a new report, Ireland’s Sustainable Energy Supply Chain Opportunity, which was carried out in consultation with the enterprise agencies: Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland and Forfas. The report estimates that Ireland is currently spending € 1.5 billion per annum on   sustainable energy solutions, supporting 18,000 jobs. Most of the increased expenditure over the next six years, which can support up to 30,000 jobs, is expected to come from  the manufacturing and construction sectors.
